# Canvas Interfaces

New user interface paradigm developed to address the cognitive complexity introduced by highly capable [coding-agents](/concepts/coding-agents) and multi-agent systems. Represents evolution beyond chat-based interfaces to spatial, visual interaction methods for managing complex agent workflows.

## Core Problem

satya-nadella identified at Build 2026 that chat as "the only artifact was impossible" when dealing with sophisticated AI agents. The success of coding agents created a [success-paradox](/concepts/success-paradox) - they became so capable that traditional interfaces couldn't handle the complexity they introduced.

## Design Principles

### Spatial Organization
Unlike linear chat interfaces, canvas interfaces provide two-dimensional space for organizing and visualizing agent work, making complex multi-step processes more comprehensible.

### Multi-Agent Coordination
Designed specifically to handle "hundred agent sessions" where multiple agents work simultaneously on different aspects of a project, requiring visual coordination and oversight.

### Cognitive Load Reduction
Addresses the excessive cognitive load transferred to humans when managing highly capable autonomous agents through better information architecture and interaction patterns.

## Implementation Context

Part of Microsoft's broader [ide-redesign](/concepts/ide-redesign) initiative necessitated by the effectiveness of [coding-agents](/concepts/coding-agents). Represents recognition that [agentic-ui](/concepts/agentic-ui) requires fundamentally different paradigms from traditional software interfaces.

## Industry Impact

Canvas interfaces signal a shift from conversation-based AI interaction to workspace-based collaboration, where humans and agents work together in shared visual environments rather than sequential text exchanges.
